This song is in heavy rotation in my ears—Regina Spektor’s “Us.”
I am giddy with the way she sings It’s con-taaaa-gee-uh-us, uh oh.
They made a statue of us
And put it on a mountaintop
Now tourists come and stare at us
Blow bubbles with their gum, take photgraphs of fun
Have fun
They'll name a city after us
And later say it's all our fault
Then they'll give us a talking to
Then they'll give us a talking to
‘Cause they've got years of experience
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
We wear our scarves just like a noose
But not cause we want eternal sleep
And though our parts are slightly used
New ones are slave labor you can keep
We're living in a den of thieves
Rummaging for answers in the pages
We're living in a den of thieves
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
And it's contagious
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
The tourists come and stare and us
The sculptor's momma sends regards
They made a statue of us
They made a statue of us
Our noses have begun to rust

Regina Spektor
Thanks, Mitzi, for burning these tunes!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Jefferson, and Bite Me Regina.
ReplyDeleteI swallowed my pride, and took a listen. She's not such a bad sort after all, and this "Us" track is pretty good. Can I still call her a twat for befouling my computer a full 2 days?
ReplyDeleteBack story: Mitzi was kind enough to download and burn Regina Spektor, unheard, as a favor to me.
ReplyDeleteRegina repaid the favor by remaining stuck in her burner for two days.
Mitzi ejected, restarted, walked away and snuck up on it . . . nothing.
Glad you finally listened, M.
The more I listen, the more I think: oh yeah. She grew up in the former USSR. Got it.
Statues. Cities named for us. Ruined ideals.
Mitzi, my trick is reboot the machine and as the splash screen shows up, hit the eject button. The burner program tends to grab hold and not let go easily.
ReplyDeletei LOVE regina spektor.
ReplyDeletei got to see her live in october <33
